SUMMARY:Advancing Gender Equality through Business and Partnership
DESCRIPTION:\n \n17.00 Registration opens\n17.30-18.15 Introduction a
 nd panel presentations\n18.15-19.00 Discussion\n19.00 Reception\n \nS
peakers:\n \n\nDr Susan Mboya, Group Director, Eurasia Africa Women
 s Economic Empowerment, The Coca-Cola Company\nMarie Staunton, CEO, P
lan UK\nLindi Hlanze, Lead on Economic Empowerment of Women and Girls,
DFID\nPenny Fowler, Head of Private Sector Advocacy, Oxfam\n\n \nCha
ir: Professor John Humphrey, Globalisation Team, Institute of Developm
ent Studies\n \nBackground\n \nA compelling social, economic and bus
iness case for investing in the economic empowerment of women is now f
irmly established.    Improving the economic position of women deli
vers strong social and economic returns, and is a powerful driver for
accelerating progress toward the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).\
n \nAs the recently released World Bank 2012 World Development Report
on Gender Equality and Development identifies: “Gender equality is
a core development objective in its own right. It is also smart econom
ics.  Greater gender equality can enhance productivity, improve devel
opment outcomes for the next generation, and make institutions more re
presentative”.\n \nA growing number of businesses are also recognis
ing that there is both a strong business and development rationale for
supporting women economic empowerment in their value chains and local
communities.\n \nAt a business level, women have demonstrated great
propensity to save and invest in their businesses, contributing to lon
g-term growth, increasing job opportunities and generating more stable
incomes for themselves and their workforce.\n \nFrom a development p
erspective, research shows that more economically active women will de
liver better health outcomes as women prioritise increased spending on
their families, particularly their children.  Studies show that incr
easing women’s share of cash income significantly increases the shar
e of household budget allocated to food, with positive nutritional ben
efits for their children.\n \nCreating economic opportunities for wom
en also strengthens their ability to access healthcare and leads to be
tter education outcomes as women are more likely to spend increases in
income on education for their children.\n \nThis session will explor
e:\n\nHow can business most effectively contribute to advancing gender
equality through the economic empowerment of women?\nWhat can we lear
n from organisations in the vanguard of this work?\nWhat role can part
nerships play in replicating and scaling successful models?\n\nHow to
