There is widespread consensus that we need to know much more about how different business models deliver improved development impact. Understanding that impact, and in so doing getting a better idea of how to invest and target resources most effectively, is increasingly important for businesses and for development agencies that are investing donor resources in enhancing the role of the private sector.

Given the potential cost and complexity of undertaking impact assessments, a key consideration in strengthening the business case for doing more in this important area is ensuring we become better at translating impact measurement results in to continuous business performance improvements that deliver greater development impacts.

We will examine how businesses are integrating and applying impact assessment into business planning and decision making in ways that enable greater alignment between business strategy and development outcomes, and strengthen the business case for developing and scaling inclusive business models.

Speakers will address the following questions:

  • What is the business case for impact measurement, and how can businesses harness impact assessment to drive continuous performance improvements that generate greater development impact?
  • How can we balance the need for rigour in impact assessment with the demands of business planning and decision making cycles?
  • What is the scope for closer collaboration between business and donors in the development of a more aligned and consistent set of impact measurement indicators and processes?
  • What are the 3-4 most important opportunities to improve practice in the next year?

Series Knowledge Partners: Overseas Development Institute, International Business Leaders Forum, World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
