Background:

Commentating on the role of inclusive business in accelerating progress towards the MDGs, Cynthia Carroll, CEO of Anglo American remarked: “The amount that we spend each year in procurement from emerging market economies is comparable to the aid budgets of the UK, France or Germany. It’s a huge sum of money, and a massive development opportunity.”

Creating more opportunities for businesses in local supply chains is increasingly recognised by businesses and development partners as an important means for extractives companies to make a durable and valuable impact on local communities. 

Strengthening local business linkages and building the competitiveness and capacity of local companies to participate in value chains ensures that economic opportunities can be more widely distributed and sustained. It also makes good business sense, helping extractives companies to improve the efficiency of local procurement processes and to save costs. 

This event will bring together business and development practitioners to discuss the latest thinking on how to harness local procurement as a driver of economic growth and development.
