I am a social entrepreneur, I work for a philanthropic foundation, I work for a non-government organisation, I am just interested

About my work:
I am a grandmother of four, living in the UK but frequently visiting SW Uganda where I have set up a small Guest House with a view to attracting tourists into the area and helping the local villagers set up educational and income-producing projects.

September 2008

I have recently returned from spending 6 weeks volunteering at our project site in SW Uganda, and have now identified two of the most pressing needs of the villagers around UGANDA LODGE.
These are:
a) The provision of a safe pure water supply, so women & children no longer have a long walk to collect their water from a dirty stream.
b) The building of a training workshop where disadvantaged youngsters can learn a trade or skill, enabling them to begin income generating businesses of their own, that will support their future families.

I’ve had the area surveyed and found we could pipe fresh clean water down from a nearby hill to supply several hundred families at a cost of approx £6,000. We have started to build a 30x6 metre workshop and I estimate that it will need about £3,000 to complete it to a good standard. We already have the necessary tools & equipment out there waiting to be used.

I am hoping to make raise much of this money at our Gala Dinner & Auction on 17th Oct, http://www.lethemhelpthemselves.com/events but I need YOUR SUPPORT. Please purchase some tickets and make it an even more memorable evening by inviting some friends to join you. If you are unable to attend, could you help by donating a prize or service to raffle or auction?
As an alternative would you or your friends be prepared to do a sponsored ‘something’ for me? I am always willing to give illustrated talks on my travels and experiences in Uganda to clubs and interested groups in return for a donation.
Finally, now our Guest House is up and running, (www.ugandalodge.com), I am actively looking for short/long term volunteers to go out to help these villagers. Anyone with a western education can teach them so much, and I know you would find it very rewarding.
Please call me to chat over ideas or offers to help.
Thankyou so much - Ann ann@annmccarthy.co.uk
