Heather Esper commented on Jamie Cross's blog post Expand the Evidence Base at the Bottom of the Pyramid
"It seems like this debate has been going on for a number of years. I expect that the evidence base will continue to grow with the data that results from the large push for BoP ventures to measure their impact via an independent party."

About my work:
Heather Esper has more than six years of experience working with social enterprises, non-profits, government institutes, and foundations across different sectors. She has conducted research in various settings including Vietnam, India, Kenya, Cambodia, Madagascar, and Mexico.

She is currently a Researcher on the Base of the Pyramid Research Initiative at the William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan (WDI) and her work focuses on the intersection of business strategy and poverty alleviation. At WDI Esper advises small and medium-sized enterprises on strategies to enhance their business model by identifying opportunities to better meet the needs of their stakeholders. She also provides recommendations to ventures on how to quantitatively measure their impact in a rigorous, yet practical, way. She manages the Initiative’s impact assessment partnerships and is responsible for their engagements from start to completion. This includes designing and structuring activities, creating data collection tools, conducting field work, managing resources, and developing final deliverables. She has personally analyzed the poverty alleviation outcomes of numerous ventures. At WDI she has co-developed a versatile tool and methodology with a multi-disciplinary view of poverty. This has been used by ventures to identify and track their poverty alleviation outcomes in a holistic way. She also co-created an impact assessment training curriculum and leads workshops designed to help ventures implement this framework.

Before joining WDI, she designed and led research efforts in rural Vietnam. This research compared the impact of different nutritional supplements on child malnutrition. Additional research was done to increase understanding of cross generational beliefs and practices related to breastfeeding and weaning.

Esper is also is an editor and writer for NextBillion.net, a website exploring the connection between development and enterprise. She holds a Masters of Public Health and Bachelors of Science in Global Health from the University of Michigan. She can be contacted athmoehle@umich.edu and followed on Twitter via @heatheresper.
