The Diaspora community provides incredible opportunities

By Isaac Twumasi-Quantus in Accra, Ghana. The importance of the Diaspora in Development cannot be emphasized enough. The international community, the international development institutions and the United Nations have acknowledged the value and critical role of the Diaspora in the particular context of development. Drawing from successful development stories in emerging countries from the South is a testimony of the concrete benefits of an active solidarity extended by the Diaspora. In Africa, the…See More

Enhancing intra Africa trade

Developing countries have reserved their right to designate the services sectors that they wish to liberalize. I am sure you will agree with me that the services industry is the most dynamic industry in many African countries.Africa stands to gain further by maintaining an offensive position in this sector. This will not only send positive signals to investors but it will also provide the predictability and transparency that is required to facilitate investment decisions. There cannot be a…See More

Africa: Consider Vocational training

It is worth recalling that vocational training is but one instrument for employment generation in Africa and, as such, should be kept in perspective. Whereas vocational training can develop appropriate skills and thereby improve labour supply and the “employability” of the work force, demand for labour depends on incentives for investment, including prices, the exchange rate and generally, the business climate in the country.Vocational training should respond to the needs of the informal…See More

The need for multicultural communication

Lack of knowledge of another culture can result in mistakes that may confuse or even offend the people with whom an organization intends to communicate. I heard on the news the other day that the Ghana Investment Promotion center (GIPC) set out to train its staff in multicultural communication strategies and skills to communicate in a more professional and appropriate manner and I thought that's a great step taken. GIPC staff is in the front line division that deals directly and daily with…See More

Delivering social networking sites

There are millions of teenagers who surf the net, most of them for one particular reason: to get connected with people online.

They do so to build friendships, fix relationships or propose to one another. Such sites are known as social networking sites, which are now more common than the…

These circumstances reduce productivity because of the little performance of the personnel which has negative influences on the economic as well as on the…

Africa’s Resource nationalism

By Isaac Twumasi-Quantus in Accra.

Resource nationalism has become an increasingly pressing issue for mining companies in the last year with an Ernst & Young report naming it the leading global business risks for mining and metals business.

A number of African countries, including Ghana and Zambia, have recently moved to increase taxes on mining operations, and other governments, such as Guinea, have proposed new legislation to increase…

The new Africa Strategy 2012

By Isaac Twumasi-Quantus In Accra.

It is about time representative African ambassadors across the world over would want to build on and strengthen their already deep bonds of friendship in a way that reflects the new realities of Africa, the continent of the future.

That Africa can move forward together, enriching and laying the groundwork for the development of a strong new economic relationship in the years to come. A relationship with far greater emphasis on trade and…

Hi:

May I crave your indulgence towards providing your perspective on this long question:

What’s your advice to someone, who has been doing so much to propagate BoP in his environment (please click on http://www.iroy.in/category/business/markets-for-poor/  for insight), which has a population of more than 112 million poor people; government officials/institutions contacted on adoption of the concept are either ignorant or don’t care about it; prospective local private sector ventures lack sectoral motivation; and it’s very likely that most related business models will succeed in the place?

I anticipate your early response.

Isaac,

We are just launching a new project in Ghana called GROW - Greater Rural Opportunities for Women. You can learn more about it here:   http://www.meda.org/women-s-economic-dev/current-projects-wed/33-greater-rural-opportunities-for-women-grow-ghana

We also have a couple of other projects elsewhere in Africa "in the pipeline" and hope to get contracts formalized for those soon.

Sorry it took so long to respond - I'm new to this site and didn't realize your comment was here.

Linda
