Through volunteer work, mentoring and my "day job", I aim to be on the frontline of driving business to have a positive impact on the societies and ecosystems it touches. While working on corporate sustainability from strategy and innovation angles, I co-founded Community Cleaning Services (CCS) in Nairobi, Kenya. CCS engages, trains and supports young entrepreneurs in Nairobi's lowest income communities to start sanitation businesses.
Topics on my radar:
Base of the Pyramid, Enterprise Development, Environment, Inclusive Business Models, Measuring Impact, Peace and Commerce, Technology, Youth Enterprise
I'm new to the network and your profile struck a chord for 2 points for me:
1. I am also a social entrepreneur, and
2. My last venture was actually dealing with malaria. I along with some partners developed a mosquito repellent candle made from pyrethrum, which I know Johnson uses in their products. Our main customers were in Nairobi slums.
Its only a pity that there are such few insecticide products on the local market with py-oil. Anyway my new venture is based on providing information to the youth to create their businesses.
I would be interested to know about the sanitation venture. Best, Fiona
Tell me me more about what you do. Based on your information it would great to hear more of the how to's regarding your work. How exactly does the work your doing impact the field. I'm very interested in the sanitation aspects of your work, supply chain and distribution.
Oh, and welcome to the tools group. The reason I created the group is to empower people with field techniques that develop their business capacity.
Thanks Justin, I checked out the information. So, let me ask you a question. Do you find that the people engaged in this approach are focused on direct engagement for the long term (6-20 years) or is this an approach more geared to aid in short term relationships (less than 5 years) or for surrogate researchers in preparation for a field team?
It seems similar to the PRA (Participatory Rural Analysis) approach of previous decades. Is it different?
Hi Justin, please get in touch with me. My company aims to connect local entrepreneurs in Africa with capital (here and in the US). We are also a social enterprise so hopefully we could collaborate in some way.
Hi Justin, let me know when you're going to be in London and we can meet up. If you're not coming down here for a while, let me know too and I could come up to Cambridge. You can email me on email@example.com
