"Interesting topic.  As Steve says, it is about the distribution of rents along the value chain.  As a development practitioner, I am interested in equitable distribution, because every relationship is about POWER, and power is always…"

"It's all very interesting stuff. In the case of the talk time mark up I think it's the end-of-line retailers who are doing the additional mark-up. The 'proper' margins on talk-time are very low."

"Equitable distribution in not necessarily equal distribution so there is no problem with different % mark ups at different value points. Access to informaiton about real costs is important but very difficult to achieve and perceptions as to what…"

"I should add that in our trial the wholesalers' mark-up is 20% and the retailers is 35% although we may tweak these (and other things) when it comes to scale-up."

"Really good points Steve. Do you have any tips on how to ensure an equitable distribution of the value created along the chain? Our key concern is to keep the retail price at a level which the majority of mothers and care-givers can afford but as we…"

Very encouraging feedback from Kit Yamoyo users

During the field trip last Thursday (8/11/12) the feedback we got on the Kit Yamoyo was 100% positive. When people were asked if the Kit Yamoyo was good the response wasn't 'Yes' but 'Maningi' meaning 'very'. However, I'm always suspicious that people say what you want to hear. Before our trip out on Friday morning, I checked in with the Katete wholesaler and put this too him. He said that I was not to worry, in the villages if your product is shit people will tell you! In this context, meet…See More

ColaLife's anti-diarrhoea kit beats the Olympic Cauldron to win Product Design of the Year

I've just got back from the field, with so many stories to tell and pictures to show, to the news that ColaLife's Kit Yamoyo has won the Product category of the Designs of the Year 2013. The maverick in me thinks it's fantastic that something designed with the poor and for the poor, and with the word 'diarrhoea' in it, has won a mainstream, international design award. I think it's safe to say that this hasn't…

Our concept for the distribution of medicines by rural retailers plays out in real life

In November 2012 the rural health centres in Kalomo District in Zambia had not received ORS for several months due to a lack of stock at national level. In January, I visited one of these health centres and asked the Clinical Officer in charge if she'd received any ORS yet.

She said they had received 200 sachets on 23 December. But, she said, they weren't using it, they were giving out Kit Yamoyos instead. What? In the ColaLife trial Kit Yamoyos should only be available to buy…

Simon, Colalife has the potential to transform!  My initiative is based on the same principle (www.mowoza.com) and I am in London at the moment, so if it is convenient I would love to meet up to discuss.  Let me know. Suzana

Just looked at your website and there are a lot of elements in common with the mobile elements of the ColaLife trial. We are going to be working with Mobile Transactions (Zambia) for the trial but could go anywhere after that. Drop me an email - simon@colalife.org - and I will send you the spec for the mobile elements of what we are doing.

I don't think a meeting before we go is going to be feasible.

Simon
