Sustainability and thriving on the challenges of change are intimately connected

This IBM study has been referred to in recent discussions on LinkedIn about why and how change programs fail and succeed.

The study, that involved 1,130 CEOs, conducted in-depth analysis to determine the characteristics of the Enterprise of the Future.

The study says “80% of CEOs view sustainability as impacting brand value”

and “While 83% of CEOs expect…

Are you building bridges or walls?

Leadership for me is the art of inspiring people to bring everything we are (the one-of-a-kind each of us is) to everything we do.

Leadership falters without management.

Management for me is the practice of making it simple and possible for people to bring everything we are to everything we do.

Successful leaders and managers are bridge builders.

They build structures, systems and most importantly communities that inspire and make it simple and…

The seven essential willabilities of real leadership

Please register for my complimentary webinars on the 7 here.

I have been carefully choosing a book to read over the Christmas/New Year holiday period for many years. And because my family knows my passion for reading I generally get more books as gifts! Since my early 20’s I have read at least one book a week. Often these days I scan and thumb through until something really grabs me.

The three books I have…

Avoiding the dis-empowerment traps

Avoiding the dis-empowerment traps

This weeks sparkenation.

I think this is priceless:

"Owners of capital will stimulate the working class to buy more and more expensive goods, houses and technology, pushing them to take more and more expensive credit, until their debt becomes unbearable. The unpaid debt will lead to bankruptcy of banks, which will have to be nationalised, and the State will have to take the road which will eventually lead to communism. " (Das Kapital,…

Choose - Decide - Do it this week

This weeks sparkenation.

I participated in an excellent webinar ‘Why should anyone believe your business is worth knowing’ on 24th November presented by my friend and colleague Kwai Yu, the Founder of Leaders Cafe and Linchpin Academy.

Kwai used a great insight from Sydney Harris to stimulate discussion. I love it and quickly captured the screenshot below.…

Are we allowing social media to ruin our real relationships?

I estimate the total number of different people that I am connected to online is more than 3000 people. I am a minnow of course. I can’t imagine life for those with more than a million twitter followers!

The key for me is that I have real relationships with about 150 people. Significantly Robin Dunbar’s number has been the constant for me pre and post social media.

The main value of having a significant social…

Are you leaving a legacy while you are still alive?

This weeks sparkenation.

This blog post Will We Cry When You Die? An Open Letter by Author of Start With Why Simon Sinek, stirred my heart and got me thinking. The great legacy we leave is the one others are acting on while we are alive.

What’s your living legacy? And is it making waves?

As Seth Godin says: “In a world of surfers, all you can do is work to make the best wave you can. The…

My 5 personal and lasting lessons from 9/11

My grandson Hamish celebrated his 10th birthday on 16th September 2011. When he arrived 5 days after 9/11 our joy was in stark contrast to the grief of thousands.

Here is a part of what I wrote in Sparkenation 7 (Living our lessons from 9/11) of my Changing What’s Normal book.

Normal

Most people respond to something bad happening to them with revenge and fail to grasp the opportunity to do… Continue

Thriving in a low confidence-high anxiety world

Some people are describing the status quo in much of the world right now as low confidence-high anxiety and I certainly sense this. I am not in any way depressed however, rather I am excited by the possibilities and results of changing what’s normal.

Here are five of my key actions that can lead to thriving in your business no matter what seems to be status… Continue

Changing what's normal conversations

Two trends I like in professional speaking are that presenters are more and more catalysts for conversation and there is an audience expectation of the speaker to engage in conversation. I love these trends as they are a personal preference.

Conversations of meaning are a challenge for most people particularly in the age of all things digital.

Here are my top twelve tips for engaging in meaningful conversations:

1) Craft and present your messages with the… Continue
